Colombo port container handling increased in May The number of containers handled at Colombo Port had increased by seven percent during last May, Port Development and Shipping Ministry press release said. The container handling at the Port had been reduced during the previous months due to war risk surcharge imposed on vessels calling at Colombo. Among the 334 vessels arrived at Colombo Port last month were 259 container ships, 65 cargo vessels and 10 ships for repairs. During the period the war risk surcharge was in effect the average vessels called at Colombo were 282. The arrival of vessels in May was an increase of 18.4. The number of containers handled was 141692. Among them 97758 was for transshipment and it was an increase of 8.6 percent. The arrival of container ships, cargo vessels and vessels for repairs and other purposes was increased by 13.6 percent, 32.7 percent and 18.4 percent respectively, the press release said. |
