Anandasangaree elected TULF President

by Ranga Jayasuriya

Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) Senior Vice- President V. Anandasangaree was yesterday elected to the party presidency which fell vacant after the death of M. Sivasithamparam.

The 48-member TULF Central Committee elected the 69-year-old Jaffna district Parliamentarian in a unanimous vote.

Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham was elected Senior Vice President, while S. Thiyagaraja was elected Joint Treasurer.

Anandasangaree whose political roots run to the old Federal Party was the acting President of the party since Sivasithamparam's death.

A lawyer-turned politician, he served in the previous Parliament and topped the preferential votes at his re-election.

The TULF has also called nominations for the Parliamentary seat which has been vacant since Sivasithamparam's death. "The Party will decide on the Parliamentary seat after scrutinising the nominations," a party spokesman said.

There are two main candidates for the seat. Party General Secretary R. Sampanthan has nominated Eastern Province politician Thurairatnasingham from Muttur while Anandasangaree has nominated Uduvil Village Council Chairman S. Muthulingam.
