Sri Lankan students win Asian Children's Art prizes

A Sri Lankan student Thesath Chalaka Nanayakkara (10) has won a Grand Prix prize at the festival of Asian Children's Art held this year by the Secretariat for the Mitsubishi Impression Gallery in Japan. Thesath who is among the children from each of the participating countries and regions to win a Grand Prix will be invited to attend the award presentation ceremony to be held in Yokohama, Japan on August 7, this year.

Apart from Tesath, nine other Sri Lankan children have won other prizes at this festival. They are Miss Anuradha Chaturangi Bandara (11), who won the Mitsubishi Public Affairs Committee Award, Miss W.D. Chamalee Neranjala de Silva (12) who won the Asian Pacific Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Associations Award, Don Gihan Subasinghe (6) who won the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan Award and Miss Samurdhika Upekani Kulasinghe (10), Gurunnehelage Thiwanka Chamera Jayasiri (12), Miss Isurika Sanduni Jayawardana (9), M.T.M. Nizraan (7), Miss Pathiranage Tharindra Samadi (8) and W.A.G.L. Wickramasinghe (11) who have won excellence awards.

A press release issued by the Secretariat for the Executive Committee, Mitsubishi Impression Gallery said winners from all Asian countries and regions were selected from a total of 49896 artworks submitted from 22 countries for the festival.

The six member panel which evaluated the artworks and selected the winning entries was chaired by Ikuo Hirayam, a Japanese style painter and UNESCO goodwill ambassador.

The secretariat has also thanked Sri Lankan Ambassador in Japan Neville Piyadigama for his support and sanctioning the use of the Sri Lanka Embassy's name as an endorser in the literature, brochures and other public relations materials used to promote this year's festival.
