Resolve to protect noble culture - President

The Poson Poya is an ideal opportunity for all Sri Lankan Buddhists to resolve protect Buddhism and our noble culture, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga says in her Poson message.

She said: "The Poson Poya is important for Sri Lankan Buddhists not only because Arahant Mahinda brought us the message of the Dhamma, but also because the very foundation of our nation, our heritage and culture stemmed from that event. We became a peaceful nation due to the influence of Buddhism.

"Arahant Mahinda taught us the lesson of compassion. He told us that man as well as other animals have the freedom to roam wherever they wish. This philosophy led to a great social revolution. This message is valid more than ever today, when we are trying to solve crucial problems.

"What we need today is a society that knows the value of patience and eschews revenge and violence. We need a barrier-free society that respects the right of all citizens to go about their daily business freely."
