Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said: "It was on Poson Day that Buddhism, a great philosophy based on rationality and virtue was brought to Sri Lanka. It was a memorable and a historic day for the world and for Sri Lankan Buddhists in particular. "The arrival of Arahat Mahinda over 2300 years ago heralded a flowering of diverse activity in literature, arts, architecture and the economy which underpinned a long period of peace and prosperity. "Not only was the Bhikku Sasana established in the country but with the advent of Theri Sangamitta an equal place for women in our society was firmly established and females too had the opportunity of entering the Sasana. "Over the centuries and especially as a consequence of various influences from outside, numerous challenges had to be faced by our people and the way of life that had been modelled on the teachings of Buddha was disrupted. "Let us resolve during this Poson season to reach deep into our revered heritage and face our challenges wisely and with courage. "This Poson Day dawns at a time when our entire nation is engaged in the difficult process of ensuring a just and a durable peace for a united nation. "The commitment of us all to this goal of a prosperous, peaceful, united country would be a truly significant way of paying our collective tribute to Arahat Mahinda on this Poson Poya day. "I trust that we will be able to achieve this noble goal with the blessings of the Triple Gem." |
