4th unofficial Test match called off

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka in consultation with the touring India 'A' team and the Sri Lanka 'A' team have decided to cancel the Third and Final unofficial Test match at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place.

The second day's play was also washed out due to overnight rain at the NCC grounds yesterday and the two teams decided to cancel the Test and start a five match one day series instead of the scheduled three match series.

The first one day match will be played on May 31 at the Police Park and the second match on the following day at the same venue.

The two teams will then move to Dambulla to play the third and fourth one day matches on June 3 and 4 and will play the fifth and final one day match on June 6 at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Earlier the first one day match was to be worked off at the De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa and the second game was scheduled for NCC grounds.

The Indians' would certainly welcome the move as they were quite anxious to get into the field and make an impact in the game. But it was only in the First Test at the SSC grounds that they got an opportunity of proving themselves as bad weather continued to spoil their chances from there onwards.

The Sri Lankans too were frustrated by the bad weather as they were hoping to give wicket-keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitarana and Pramodaya Wickremasinghe another chance of proving their capabilities. (C.D.)
