Sri Lanka's tea production improved in April to 27.2 million kg from last year's 24.2 million kg. This increase of nearly 3 million kg is also an improvement on the production of April 2000. The larger percentage increase came for the High Grown elevation (33.8%) towards the total increase, followed by the Mid Grown sector with 11.2%, and the Low Grown elevation with 2% gain. 8.7 million kg, 5.1 million kg and 13.4 million kg from the respective elevations made the total for the month. Year on year comparisons therefore, show a production improvement by 12.3% nationally for April 2002.

January to April production however still lag behind last years 103.8 million kg and the current trend is likely to follow in to May, especially, when considering that the 31.3 million kg in May last year was an all-time record production for that month. Nevertheless, with the prevailing wet weather, May 2002 should return a healthy harvest.

The current year's total cumulative production of 99.4 million kg is made up of 28.2 million kg from the High Grown sector - an increase of 9.9% from last year, and the Mid Grown region with 17.8 million kg - marginally higher, whilst the Low Country contributed with only 53.3 million kg, which is 11.5% below last year. The sharp drop in the Low Grown sector comparatively, accounting for nearly 7 million kg, has therefore made all the difference, for a lower national output. (Source: John Keells Ltd)
