Taiwan rules out Chinese missile hitting plane

TAIPEI, Monday (Reuters) Taiwan's military on Monday dismissed media speculation that a Boeing 747-200 that crashed into the sea on Saturday was hit by a Chinese missile.

"Communist China has denied it. We think its denial is highly credible," the defence ministry spokesman said by telephone.

"Based on our own judgment, we can also say it's absolutely impossible," he said in response to a report on cable news network Formosa TV which quoted an unidentified military analyst as saying a Chinese missile may have hit the plane.

Mystery surrounds the disaster in which a China Airlines flight CI 611 carrying 206 passengers and 19 crew broke apart in mid-air before crashing into the Taiwan Strait. All are feared dead.

The spokesman said Taiwan's armed forces did not conduct any exercises or missile-testing in the area at the time of crash.
