Agenda for talks must be set first - Helgesen Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen said yesterday that it was very important to set a clear agenda for direct talks between the government and the LTTE in Thailand, which are tentatively scheduled for June. The Deputy Minister told MTV in an interview that "it could be a mistake to try and rush the two sides to the negotiating table." Helgesen said the most important thing is to agree on an agenda for talks." The aim is to bring the two parties to the table as soon as possible but if you rush it and bring them to the table with no clear agenda, I think that would be detrimental," he said. " We are most interested in the quality of the agenda than in the actual timing," he said. Helgesen was recently in London for talks with the chief LTTE negotiator Anton Balasingham. He arrived in Colombo over the weekend to meet government leaders and officials. |
