CR in hard fought 17-5 win

CR and FC scored a hard fought 17 points (one goal, two tries) to 5 (one try) win over a gallant Navy outfit in their Caltex 'A' Division League rugby match played at Longden Place yesterday after leading 7-nil at 'lemons'.

Navy's forwards played like terriers in the loose to match upto their counterparts with Suranga, Kaluarachchi, Malewana, Ravi Jayasuriya and Janarthan giving of their best. CR's three-quarters too could not make much headway with centres Kaluarachchi and Abeygunawardena being 'nailed' time and again by their opposite numbers Gamage and Kolonne.

In the 25th minute of the first half CR's fly half Roshan Peiris missed a sitter of a penalty from 20 metres out. However, the Red Shirts surged into the lead on the stroke of half time when scrum half Champika Nishantha scampered through to touch down under the posts after they won a five metre scrum. Roshan Peiris added the extra points to make it 7-0 at the breather.

In the 12th minute of the second half CR's prop forward Harin Gabriel powered his way to touch down mid left off a five metre scrum. Peiris missed the conversion.

Ten minutes later the sailors reduced the deficit when hooker A. S. D. Fernando crashed through to score by the corner flag off a five metre line out. Pradeep missed the conversion and the score read 12-5.

Just before the final whistle CR number eight Savantha de Saram barged through to touch down mid right off a five metre scrum. Peiris missed the conversion and CR ran out winners by 17-5.

Referee: Mahinda Jayawardena. (R.S.)
