Isipatana International Rugby Sevens on September 7 and 8

One of the top rugby playing schools in the country Isipatana College will be conducting an International Schools Rugby Sevens on September 7 and 8 under floodlights at CR and FC grounds, Longden Place to mark its 50th anniversary.

School rugby teams from 11 countries England, Australia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Russia, Dohar and Switzerland have been invited to take part in this tournament while local schools will be invited to take part depending on their performance in the 2002 schools tournament.

Isipatana has received the blessings of the Ministries of Sports and Education, SLRFU, Schools Rugby Football Association, Asian Rugby Football Union and International Rugby Board to conduct this tournament.

Trophies will be given to the Cup champions, Plate champions, Bowl champions, Shield champions and Best Player of the tournament in addition to replicas to the members of the champion teams.

Isipatana started playing rugby in 1963 and has produced several outstanding ruggerites who have represented Sri Lanka with distinction including Hisham Abdeen who played for Sri Lanka as a schoolboy at the 1980 Hong Kong Sevens. They have also produced an international referee - Dilroy Fernando who recently officiated in two World Cup qualifying matches.

The reasons for conducting this tournament are:

* To celebrate the golden jubilee of the college in a first of its kind event in Sri Lanka whilst focusing on rugby development amongst the youth in the country.

* To promote the game among outstation schools and create an interest for the game in the country. The college will host students from the North and East providing them an opportunity to learn the game.

* To give top rugby playing schools in the country an opportunity to play against overseas teams. Investment

A total cost of Rs. 4.5 million is estimated for the event, which includes all facilities from arrival to departures of all foreign teams. Local teams will be given equal facilities as per all foreign teams, which would include food, lodging, medical, insurance and transport to and from the tournament venue. - (R.S)
