Garbage management project launched

The experience gained at the Vavuniya UC garbage project and its success prompted the launching this project at Anuradhapura Peter Schmitter of GTZ Germany said after laying the foundation stone for the solid garbage management project buildings at the Anuradhapura Walisinghe Harischandra Udyanaya.

He said: You kill two birds with one stone when garbage is fruitfully used. It is a great pleasure for me to associate myself with the newly formed Anuradhapura Municipal Council", he said.

Municipal Commissioner, Sarath Wijesinghe said: 'The biggest problem city faces is garbage disposal. This project will turn garbage into money. I must thank Dr. Kithsiri Caldera, former chairman of the Anuradhapura UC for taking so much interest in the project. If not for him this project would not have been launched".

The Community Environment Unit of the Ministry of Forests and Environment has allocated Rs. 3,343,250 for this project to Anuradhapura Sama Vihara Environment Organisation, Anuradhapura Municipal Council is the coordinating agency. The project is aimed at producing compost (carbonic fertilizer) using garbage making aware the people of the safe garbage disposal and producing vegetables using this fertilizer.

Ven. Mahavilachchiye Wimala Thera, Viharadhipati Sama Vihara administered pansil at the ceremony. Dr. Tissa Warakagoda, Deputy Mayor and Mrs. Lanka Dabare of GTZ also addressed the meeting. Mr. Asoka Neelakantha, MMC also attended.
