Sandalwood logs seized at airport

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Customs officials at the Katunayake International Airport on Sunday evening detected a consignment of sandalwood logs which were allegedly being smuggled to a Middle Eastern country.

The consignment included eight logs of sandalwood packed in the luggage of two passengers. Its value has not yet been ascertained, an investigating official told the 'Daily News', adding that it is illegal to take sandalwood out of the country.

Customs detained two Pakistanis, believed to be a father and a son, with the sandalwood consignment. They were scheduled to leave for Dubai on an Emirates flight.

However, the two suspects have now been released, said the official adding that further investigations were being conducted.

The detection was made by Assistant Superintendents of Customs S. Sekar, R. P. Moonasinghe and Milton Perera.
