Police to review Vesak traffic plans

Police officers manning traffic in Colombo and its suburbs faced an unprecedented challenge on Sunday and yesterday with large crowds flocking in to view Vesak pandals and other celebrations.

vehicles were gridlocked for almost two hours on Sunday night on the Kandy road. "The road was completely filled with bumper-to-bumper traffic and none of the vehicles moved a single feet at least for one and a half hours," a Police official said.

A large number of travellers missed their flights from the International Airport as they waited helplessly in their cars at various junctions on the Negombo road.

Police said many persons had stopped their vehicles at pandals and dansalas and gone out, compounding their woes. Jaywalkers and groups of cyclists were another problem, they said.

Police sources pointed out that a large number of vehicles had entered Colombo from the outstations, even from the North-East, thanks to the prevailing peaceful atmosphere. "This year, there is a sense of peace, a sense of freedom and the people feel confident about going out to view the Vesak celebrations."

Police yesterday reviewed traffic arrangements at divisional level to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles on the main roads on the next few days.
