by Sarath Malalasekera

The Navagamuwa Police investigating the killing of Kaduwela Wasantha and seven others had found a number plate bearing registration number 251 - 3878. Police are trying to ascertain whether this is the correct number of the vehicle in which the assailants came to commit the crime.

"We have forwarded this number to the RMV to obtain the name of the genuine owner of the vehicle," Inspector Mangala Dehideniya, OIC, Navagamuwa Police yesterday said.

Jayawansa Renuka who received gunshot injuries and was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on Sunday succumbed to his injuries yesterday, the Police said.

"We have received several clues regarding the killing. A special team deployed by the Western Province South DIG Sirisena Herath is working on it," the Navagamauwa OIC said.

The Army number plate bearing the registration number - Army 5858 in which the assailants came to commit the crime is definitely a false number plate, OIC Dehideniya said.

On Sunday morning, an unidentified gang wearing military type uniforms killed the most wanted underworld gang leader Kaduwela Wasantha and seven others at Medhananda Mawatha, Pahala Bomiriya in the Navagamuwa Police area.

The Navagamuwa Police had found several spent T 56 and S 84 bullets at the scene of the incident. These bullets will be sent to the Government Analyst for a comprehensive report, the OIC said.

After killing the gang leaders the assailants had left the vehicle in which they had come to commit the crime. The Police found the body of Kaduwela Wasantha outside the vehicle in which the assailants were travelling. The other bodies were found inside the vehicle.
