Plantation Industries Minister Lakshman Kiriella has proposed an awards scheme for the plantation sector and will have many categories of awards which will be made on an annual basis.

The criteria for the awards will be based on not only profits, but the rewards also will revolve round other aspects such as treatment to shareholders, employees and social responsibility. The scheme will also take into account the degree to which these companies and organisations conform to Government policy, Minister Kiriella told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

The organisations which will be eligible for these awards will be the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs), the Tea Small Holders, the Private Tea Factory Owners and coconut growers.

Minister Kiriella has written to the Chairman of the Planters' Association of Sri Lanka- the umbrella organisation of the Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs), Private Tea Factory Owners' Association (PTFOA), Federation of Tea Small Holder Societies (FTSHS), Coconut Growers' Association, Coconut Development Authority (CDA), Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) and the Rubber Development Department.

Minister Kiriella in his communique to the Chairman of the Planters' Association Mahendra Amerasuriya has proposed that the performance of these estate companies be monitored by a professional association such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICA) or the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). He has also suggested alternatively a business publication such as Business Today or LMD.
