World textile fibre consumption to increase by 2% in 2002

World Textile fibre consumption is expected to increase by 2% in 2002, from 50 million tons in 2001 to 51 million tons in 2002. In 2001, it had registered a 1.6% of increase over the previous year, according to the March 2002 issue of "Textile News".

Cotton consumption, is expected to increase by 1.6% in 2002, while, non-cotton consumption is to expand by 2.5%.

One reason for the slow growth of textile consumption, especially cotton consumption, has been the slow down in the world economy.

But there has been an increase in the mill consumption of cotton in the former Soviet Republics, China (Mainland), Brazil and Pakistan, but this has been more than offset by a sharp drop in US and Mexico and reductions in Turkey and other European and Asian countries.

However, world consumption of Mill cotton is forecast to increase by 0.7% (or 150,000 tons) in 2001-2002. The 20 million ton mark is unlikely to be surpassed before 2002/3, though.

Mill consumption of cotton in the former USSR increased by 10% to reach 640,000 tons in 2000/1. Most of it took place in Russia, because of the devaluation of the Rouble which made Russia's exports competitive.

In the developing countries as a whole, Mill consumption of cotton increased by 1.2% to 15.5 million tons in 2000/1. The increase took place mainly in mainland China, Pakistan and Indonesia. These countries, along with India and Turkey are expected to lead the increase in the world consumption of Mill cotton to 15.8 million tons (1.5%) in 2001/2 and to 16 million tons in 2002/2.
