Sri Lanka make promising start

Hosts Sri Lanka made a promising start to their Asia-Oceania Qualifying Zone Boys' under-14 World Junior Tennis Championship when they trounced Uzbekistan 3-0 on the opening day of the week-long tournament begun at the National Tennis Centre courts, Colombo yesterday.

Sri Lanka's N.S. Nishendran got the better of Andrey Boldarev 6/3, 6/3 and Franklyn Emmanuel cruised to victory in his match against Jamol Umarov by 6/1, 6/1.Nishendran-Emmanuel combination won the doubles convincingly defeating Umarov and Vaja Uzakov of Uzbekistan 6-0, 6-3.

In the other ties worked out today, China (seeded 2nd), Australia (3), Japan (4) and India (5) emerged winners against Pakistan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Indonesia respectively.

Sixth seeded Sri Lanka, however, will have a tough time ahead against Japan for the dominancy in the 3rd of the four Groups in the Championship.

Malaysia and Uzbekistan are the other two countries in Group 3. Only two teams will get through to the knockout stage of the Championship which will end on May 5

In the other matches played on the opening day yesterday, Hong Kong beat Syria 2-1, India beat Indonesia 3-0, China beat Pakistan 3-0, Australia beat Taiwan 2-1, Japan beat Malaysia 3-0, Thailand beat New Zealand 2-1.
