Opposition Leader calls on Archbishop

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday morning called on Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando to discuss the current peace process and the situation in the country.

This was the first time Mr. Rajapkse met the Archbishop in his capacity as the Opposition Leader and their discussion mainly centred round the present status of the peace process, a spokesman for the Opposition Leader's office told the Daily News.

Mr. Rajapakse had explained to the Archbishop that the Opposition is always ready to extend its unstinted support for a genuine peace which would not harm the country's territorial integrity.

The Opposition Leader had also elaborated that the Government should take swift measures to eliminate any doubts about the peace process cast in the minds of people living in the South, the spokesman added.

While commending the support extended by the Opposition Leader to the peace process, Archbishop Rt.Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando had stressed that the Opposition should cooperate with the Government to usher in a lasting peace in the country, the spokesman added.

Gampaha district PA MP Jeyaraj Fernandopulle also accompanied Mr. Rajapakse during the visit.
