Mother of five hanged, six others die in Kashmir violence SRINAGAR, India, April 23 (AFP) - Suspected Muslim militants hanged a 40-year-old woman in Indian Kashmir, where six more people died in insurgency-linked violence overnight and Tuesday, police said. Rafiqa Biwi, who has five children, was abducted by armed gunmen overnight and hanged at the village of Hadora, on the outskirts of Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar. Police blamed Muslim militants for the killing. However, none of the dozen militant groups active in Kashmir claimed responsibility. There was also no clear motive for the killing. Biwi's husband had been shot dead by gunmen four years back. A teenager, Imran Mir, was also killed after gunmen abducted him from his house near Shopian township, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Srinagar. Police said Mir was killed by militants, who slit his throat. Security forces also shot dead three militants in two separate encounters in the southern district of Poonch. In the same district, suspected militants shot dead Alum Bi, a 70-year-old woman, police said. A Sikh policeman was shot dead in the Doda district. More than 35,000 people have died in Kashmir since the eruption of an
Islamic insurgency against Indian rule in 1989. Separatists put the death
toll twice as high. |
