KV ruggerites win Gramoxone Trophy by Kandy Sports Correspondent at Radella Kelani Valley Plantations annexed the Gramoxone trophy when they beat the defending champions Maskeliya Plantations 9-7 in the finals of the Inter-Plantations Seven-a-Side rugby tournament organised by the Dimbulla Athletic and Cricket Club and sponsored by Chemical Industries (Colombo) Ltd (CIC) and played for the ninth successive year at the picturesque Radella grounds, Dimbula. At the breather Kelani Valley Plantations led 6-0. Chief Executive Officer of the Kelani Valley Plantations Kavi Seneviratne was the chief guest while Chairman CIC Ltd., B. R. L. Fernando was the guest of honour. Former Trinity College ruggerite and Rugby Lion A. Kesgahakumbura of Kelani Valley Plantations was adjudged the player of the tournament. The cup semi-finals turned out to be a one-sided affair as Kelani Valley beat Watawala Plantations 35-0 and Maskeliya Plantations beat Kegalle Plantations 35-0. Kapugastotenna Plantations won the Plate final defeating Talawakelle Plantations 15-0 to annex the CIC Pohora Trophy. In the semi-finals Hapugastenna Plantations beat Namumukula Plantations 19-0 and Talawakelle Plantations beat Udapusellawa Plantations also 19-nil. Kotagala Plantations won the Bowl title by trouncing Kahawatte Plantations 28-nil after leading 14-0 at the breather. Messrs Kavi Senaviratne, Shamal Fernando (Executive Finance Director CIC), P. H. A. N. Dias, Trevor Nugawela, Mohan Janapathy, Lal Basnayake distributed the awards. The results of the other matches played are: Maskeliya beat Hapugastenna 52-0, Watawala beat Kahawatte 40-0, Kelani Valley beat Talawakelle 38-0, Kegalle beat Namunukula 27-0, Watawala beat Udapussellawa 12-10, Kegalle beat Malwatte 40-0, Hapugastenna beat Kotagala 22-19, Kahawatte beat Udapussellawa 10-7, Namunukula beat Malwatte 17-5, Maskeliya beat Kotagala 45-0, Kotagala beat Malwatte 26-0. The above matches were officiated by the newly formed Central Province Rugby Referees Society.
