Kandy Youth SC for Caltex A Division tourney

by Kandy Sports Correspondent

Kandy Youths Sports Club will participate in the forthcoming Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.

This club in its debut last year helped and guided by the former Minister of Sports, Lakshman Kiriella did extremely well to beat several more experienced clubs including the CR & FC at Longden Place which stands out as their best performance to-date.

This year the club will be led by Chaminda Samaratunga and will have several of their last year's players including their first skipper Shantha Rohana and stand-in skipper Suranga Kodituwakku.

The President of the Kandy Youths SC Janaka Pathirana said that a number of promising ruggerites who performed well for their schools will be turning out for practices which is expected to commence this week at the Bogambara Stadium.

Janaka Pathirana also said Malik Samarawickrema has promised every assistance to the club including finding a sponsor to go through the season. Last year Malik Samarawickrama provided financial assistance to the tune of Rs. two lakhs to help the club out of the financial difficulties during the tail end of the season which enabled them to participate in the knockout tournament.

Pathirana also said that the club is faced with the problem of finding a suitable venue for practices as at present they could ill afford to pay the exorbitant ground fees charged by the Bogambara Stadium for practices during the afternoon. The club is also looking to having their practice sessions at Peradeniya which the fee charged is much lower despite the extra travelling costs.

The team is likely to be coached by Ananda Kasthuriarachchi or Alex Lasarus. A final decision will be taken by the committee this week.
