Talduwa Rally Cross 2002 large crowd expected to witness top class rallying

The Talduwa Rally Cross organised and conducted by Sri Lanka Army Logistic Command, Kosgama and Motor Racing Association (MRA) will be held on May 11 and 12 at Talduwa Circuit, Awissawella, with assistance from Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee said Major General M. M. Munasinghe at a press briefing held at Army Headquarters on Monday evening.

He said all proceeds of this event will be utilised for soldiers and their families at Ranavirugama, Kosgama. Last year's event brought in a purse of Rs. 600,000 which was used to construct a library. This year's profits will be utilised to further develop these necessities of Ranavirugama, he said.

He also added all other Regiments Services Corp, Ordnance Corp, Mechanical Corp, Engineering/Mechanical and Electrical Corp Engineering Services Corp, General Services Corp and Military Police are also involved in this project in organisational matters.

David Todd President of Motor Racing Association explaining the details of the track and other matters pertaining to the event said it is completely different from other Motor Crosses held here. Motor Cross' are mainly on gravel circuits inclusive of jumps and corners, but here in Talduwa track has three different segments grass, gravel and tarred road for competitors. This sort of track is very competitive he said. The competitors who face the start on grass track will move to gravel are and then to tarred track and back to a streak of grass before they complete a lap covering a distance of 1.4 kilometres.

Tood also added that this year three new events have been included for standard Mini Cars upto 1000 cc Ford Laser and Nissan March upto 1300 cc cars. This inclusion of events bring the meet to an international level he said.

A total of 25 events have been lined up for the day with practices being held on May 11. On this day timing will be recorded with the intention of running events on schedule on the final day. He also said events will have mass a start. Entry forms which could be obtained from Millennium Park, Darley Road, Colombo 10, should be sent to the same address with required entry fees before April 30. Entry fees for standard cars and Racing cars are 2500 and 3500 respectively. Racing Riders have to submit a fee of Rs. 1500 while other riders are required to pay a fee of Rs. 650.

There will be an event for Jeeps and Four Drive vehicles for Sri Lanka Army personnel while a special car event is scheduled for all service personnel. This event will be for cars upto 1500 cc, he said.

The Sri Lanka Army the organisers of this event who expect a large crowd of Motor racing enthusiasts from Colombo and other surrounding areas hope to arrange transport facilities after consulting transport authorities of these areas said an army official. The meet will commence at 8.00 a.m.
