Fifteen abducted persons released by Ranga Jayasuriya Fourteen civilians and an EPDP candidate who were abducted and held in custody allegedly by the LTTE in Ampara were released yesterday after the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission intervened, an official of the SLMM office in Ampara told the Daily News. Two complaints were made by the EPDP to the SLMM Ampara office over these two separate incidents which took place during the weekend. Though we are informed of the release of Balasundaram Surendram - an EPDP candidate of the last Parliamentary Election - it is not yet confirmed, as he has not yet contacted the EPDP after his abduction, former EPDP Parliamentarian K. Vigneshwaran told the Daily News. Balasundaram Surendram was abducted by a group of LTTE carders identified as Bawa, Henry and Stalin on April 20 in Ampara, Thirukkovil. The fourteen civilians in Polavil, Akkarapattu in the Government controlled area were told to report to the LTTE camp at Rufuskulam in the LTTE controlled area by the LTTE area leader Pankayan on April 21. It was alleged that they were not allowed to return and were held in custody for three days. |
