SLFP to announce its policy on peace process soon

by Rodney Martinesz

The SLFP, which is the main constituent of the opposition People's Alliance will come to the open with its comprehensive stance on the current peace process within the next couple of days.

A four member committee which made a detailed study of the current happenings on the peace front, had completed its reprot that was handed over to President Kumaratunga prior to her Indian visit.

A response from the President is awaited at any moment after which the party would inform the country of its stance on the peace process, Parliamentarian W.D.J. Seneviratne told the Daily News.

Seneviratne who headed this committee, which also included Messrs Nimal Siripala de Silva, Athauda Seneviratne and Reginald Cooray, said that the party had decided to make its stance clear particularly in the light of certain statements made by LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at the recent press conference.

"We have analysed the statements and made our conclusions".

The Report was handed over to the President as the head of the SLFP. They were awaiting her response from India before going public.

"We expect her endorsement of the contents of the Report to happen within the next couple of days.

Meanwhile the SLFP yesterday was circumspect over its non-participation in the JVP sponsored anti-LTTE rally at Hyde Park in an official capacity. Only Anura Bandaranaike, Mangala Samaraweera and a few others attended the rally.

A conspicuous absentee was opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Mr. Seneviratne told the Daily News that the SLFP as a national party could not be seen as portraying an anti-minority line by participating at such rallies.
