Move to provide opportunities to village artistes

by Maharagama special correspondent Vehelle Piyathilake

During the last regime the cultural exchange program with other countries was not implemented in a fair way. No system was adopted in selecting the artistes for the tours. Only the state dancing and music group participated in foreign cultural tours, said the Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku at the media conference held recently at the ministry.

He said: "Thirty countries signed an agreement with Sri Lanka for the purpose of ex-changing artistes among member countries.

"Anyway there was no proper system in selecting artistes for foreign tours. The talented artistes in rural areas were not given any opportunity to participate in those tours."

The Minister also said that he would make arrangements to schedule a cultural calendar in exchanging artistes from January 2003. This will give more opportunities to the traditional artistes to take part in foreign tours in the future.

According to the new system more opportunities will be given to the village level traditional artistes and schoolchildren groups who show their abilities in performing arts, he said.
