'Children should learn IT as early as possible'

by Ananda Kannangara

Acquiring knowledge on Information Technology (IT) by children from their younger days is immensely important considering the current challenges of the new millennium and the great service rendered to fulfil this aspiration of children by private establishments such as Tec Sri Lanka must be highly appreciated, Chairman National Youth Services Amateur Athletic Association Sunil Jayaweera said.

He made these observations at a ceremony at the Nawarangahala to coincide with a cultural show organised by the Tec Sri Lanka computer institution, Nawala recently. Around 100 students between the ages of 7 and 25 who receive computer education from Tec Sri Lanka presented the show conducted under the theme "Nidahasa saha Samaya" (Freedom and Peace). Chairman Tec Sri Lanka Niranjan Nanayakkara presided.

He said: "It is delighted to note that receiving computer education by our children is increasing sharply due to the competitive atmosphere in our country among students who have acquired a knowledge of information technology".

"The sudden progress in the development of the economy and the increase of computer based employment opportunities in the country is the secret of children, paying more attention on computer studies today than before".

Mr. Jayaweera also appreciated the invaluable service rendered by Tec Sri Lanka by granting scholarships annually to our youth especially in distant areas who have never received computer education and also paid a glowing tribute to the management of Tec Sri Lanka for receiving the prestigious International Standard Award (ISO)- 2001 presented by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution for the painstaking effort taken by the institution to teach computer studies to children in the country.
