New garbage disposal project from CMC by Florence Wickramage One thousand houses in the city of Colombo have been identified by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) as a household base to participate in the Garbage Disposal and Solid Waste Management Project of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. A spokesman for the CMC told the 'Daily News' that different coloured bins have been issued free of charge to these houses with instructions to separate waste matter into three categories, to facilitate the recycling process. The CMC has made arrangements to collect these bins once in two weeks and sell the waste paper collected to the National Paper Corporation and plastic waste to a re-cycling plant at Sethsiri, Moratuwa. The money thus collected would be utilised for the welfare of workers engaged in this task, the spokesman said. Around 600 - 650 tons of garbage is collected daily in the Colombo Municipal Council limits. The CMC plans to expand this project to cover the entire Colombo city in due course to encourage people's participation in the CMC's "Keep the City Clean" campaign. |
