The Presidential Special Investigation Unit has taken steps to interdict 16 public officers involved in frauds and corruption. Four officers have been remanded and two others dismissed. A total of 36 cases have been investigated. The offenders will be prosecuted under the Public Property Act, says a press release issued by the Director General of the Presidential Media Unit. Most of the complaints received by the Unit are against high ranking officers in the Departments of Irrigation and Agrarian Services and the Provincial Engineering departments. Inquiries in respect of 17 complaints connected to the Irrigation Department and the Provincial Irrigation departments have been finalised by the High Courts and some are pending. The Special Investigation Unit has detected the modus operand of financial frauds committed by the officers implementing programs, funded by the government, to supply Irrigated water to the people. The investigation officers have found the irrigation projects certified as completed were actually not completed, however the contractors have been paid in full. It was further revealed that projects completed were not up to the stipulated standards and most of the bunds and canals need reconstruction. Inquiries reveal that these officers had violated the accepted government tender procedures while enriching themselves through fraudulent means. The Investigating Officers also noted in the course of their inquiries, the officers who sensed they were being investigated, were making hurried efforts to cover up their frauds. There is positive public response to this Special Investigation Unit set up by the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to eliminate frauds and corruption in the public service," the Media release further says. |
