Sri Lankans excel at Junior Tennis in Jakarta

Sri Lanka's top under-14 players Franklin Emmanuel and N. S. Nishendran gave Sri Lanka tennis the much needed boost when they reached the finals and semi-finals respectively of the ITF East Asian 14 and under Championships being played in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Emmanuel who was seeded No. 1, beat Umarov Jamol of Uzbekistan and Aidil Faisal of Indonesia to reach the final. Nishendran the 3rd seed beat Nedunchezhiyan Jeevan of India and Gee Ci Long of Malaysia to enter the semi-finals, but lost to Gupta the ultimate winner 6/3, 7/6. Nishendran took third place when he beat Nedunchezhiyan Jeevan of India 6/7, 6/1, 7/5 in the semi-final play off. Gupta beat Emmanuel 6/3, 7/6 in the finals. Even though this event is called the East Asian Championships, the best players from Central and South Asia also participated said Ananda de Silva, General Secretary. What is even more significant is that Sri Lanka has produced two 'top class' players at Asian level, he said.
