Fishing by dynamiting: Eight detained

The Sri Lanka Navy has detained eight suspects from Galle who were caught in the act of illegal fishing by dynamiting in the sea off Gintota on April 6.The suspects along with the production have been handed over to the Harbour Police by the Navy .

The suspects had in their possession 500 grams of gelignite , two air compressors, two regulators, a diving mask ,an oxygen tank , four litres of petrol , 20 litres of kerosene oil .

They also had seer fish and other varieties of small fish which the DMO's report certified the cause of death to be vibration due to heavy dynamiting .

Dynamiting damages the delicate coral structure of the sea and kills larvae and all life forms of oceanic resulting in the depletion of the fishery products and corals officials said.
