Strokes in Sri Lanka are on the increase. It is the fourth commonest cause of death. Therefore, we have to take every step to prevent strokes, said Consultant Neurologist Dr. Githanjan Mendis addressing a seminar in connection with World Health Day which fell on April 7. Dr. Mendis said most patients with stroke came to know they have predisposing conditions only after having a stroke, high blood pressure is the commonest cause of stroke. Then smoking, Diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol levels. Thick blood, overweight, lack of exercise and stress are the other causes which could be prevented. Globally 10% of beds in many hospital are occupied by stroke patients and about 70% of these patients are subsequently completely cured. Another 10% end up with some disability, another 10% in a wheel chair and the rest bed bound.
