'New scheme in schools for quick results'

by Gampaha group correspondent

A scheme to release all officers from the teacher-instructor to the Director in the educational field for specified periods from office to schools to look into shortcomings in discipline, school environment teaching methods and parents, responsibility will be implemented shortly to give quick results, said Minister of School Education, Suranimala Rajapaksa.

He was speaking at the annual prize-giving at Gampaha Bandaranaike Maha Vidyalaya.

Mr. Rajapaksa said a number of schools have been chosen due to attendance being less than 200. These will be converted into creative education centres for training with the assistance of the Youth Services Ministry for school leavers.

He said Bandaranaike Maha Vidyalaya has a long history with many distinguished old boys in all fields. It has been a blessing to Siyane Korale.

The Minister said today there are 9837 schools. Today there is a congestion in urban schools and they are overstaffed. We have the responsibility of giving an equal education for every child. Hence 187,000 teachers should be divided equally among all schools. We have also inaugurated the 4,000 library program.

He said the Gampaha District has been included in the Sisu Saviya program for grades 10,11,12 and 13 where scholarships will be given.

He added that it was Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who for first time in 1983 said computer technology should be introduced to schools. We will expand this project considering the needs of the age.

U.K. Gunawardene, Senior Assistant Secretary Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs said a hostel was necessary for the school and land should be acquired early.

Pandu Bandaranayake, Gampaha district MP and Ranjit Jayasundera Principal also spoke.
