by Manjula Fernando The cut-off marks for the 2002/2003 academic year will be released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) before April end, authoritative sources told the Daily News yesterday. The sources said that they are now awaiting re-correction results of the 2001 August GCE Advanced Level students, from the Examinations Department to finalise the work. The release of the cut-off mark based on which students will be admitted to different faculties of universities got delayed this year due to the controversial introduction of a new selection criteria called Z-score. Thus, admissions to universities are also expected to get delayed. Several students sought legal redress against the new criteria which they phrased as an unfair one, especially for those who offered four subjects at the AL examination. Nevertheless, many academics and university authorities have welcomed the new criteria saying that it will not penalise university entrants in any way. In view of the agitations the government has promised to review the new selection criteria next year, but, it will have its course for the time being. The sources, being asked whether universities can admit April AL candidates also within the course of this year said, certain universities such as the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura and Kelaniya have the capacity to admit two batches in one year. "If the results come early I'm sure we can work towards this goal," he added. |
