by Trincomalee correspondent The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in a circular letter to all District Secretaries and Government Agents has informed that an inter-ministerial committee has been established on the direction of the Prime Minister to ensure the supply of essential food items islandwide at stable prices. The functions of the committee include the coordination of food imports in order that local producers of food crops could market their products without hindrance, facilitation of stable producer prices through limitation of food imports during peak local harvest period. Determination of import quantities and periods of import of essential food items during times of deficit in order that the prices of essential food items will be stable. In order to facilitate the performance of the foregoing, the committee has also decided to obtain regular information on crops production from all the districts. Crop production progress and forecast pertaining to paddy (rice), dried chillies, big onions, red onions, potato and maize should be forwarded before 20th of each month.
