Rs. 140 m to be reimbursed to Sri Dalada Maligawa Fund

Pursuant to a Cabinet decision taken on the initiative of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the sum of Rs.140 million which was expended for the restoration of Sri Dalada Maligawa following the LTTE attack will be reimbursed to the Maligawa out of Treasury Funds, states the Secretary to the Finance Ministry Charitha Ratwatte.

The Finance Secretary disclosed this fact at a special media conference held recently at the Dalada Maligawa under the patronage of Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijayeratne.

The Diyawadana Nilama explained that the Rs.140 million spent on renovation work constitutes a large amount of donations made by the devotees as well as funds released by the Buddhasasana Ministry and other than that, the Maligawa did not receive compensation on that account from the Government. He said that other than the restoration work consequent upon the LTTE attack, nothing was done to improve the gold plated canopy over the shrine room.

He said that out of the intended reimbursement, Rs. 20 million will be allocated for the restoration of the gold plated canopy, Rs. 10 million each will be allocated for the development work of the two Chapters of the Malwatu and Asgiri Temples and the balance Rs. 100 million will be deposited in the Sri Dalada Maligawa Buddhist Welfare Fund.

State Engineering Corporation General Manager Gemunu Silva said that the present gold plated canopy will have to be replaced by more durable gold plated, porcelain or ceramic tiles which will cost Rs. 15 million.

The proposed renovations are expected to commence before the ensuing Esala festivities and expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Buddhasasana Commissioner H.W.D. Sunil and Buddhasasana Ministry Secretary N.W. Weralupitiya attended the meeting.
