Lalith de Mel joins Board of Hemas Holdings

Business leader Lalith de Mel has joined the board of Hemas Holdings, a conglomerate with diversified interests in the Healthcare, Personal care, Transportation, Leisure and Apparel sectors with an annual turnover of Rs. 5 billion.

Mr. de Mel, received his primary education at St. Joseph's College, before graduating at Cambridge and Harvard. He served most of his career with Reckitt Benkiser Plc, a world leader in Consumer products. He was appointed to the main board in 1991, and held the position of Group Director - Global Pharmaceuticals at the time of his retirement in 1999.

In the recent past, he has served as Chairman of the Board of Investment (BOI), Chairman Sri Lanka Telecom and Director - People's Bank. He continues to serve as Chairman Reckitt Benkiser Sri Lanka and is on the board of John Keells Holdings. He is also a Director at CDC Capital Partners Plc UK a Sterling pounds 1 billion venture capital fund investing in emerging markets.

In welcoming Mr. de Mel to the board, Husein Esufally, CEO of Hemas Holdings said: "Over the years we have developed strong business and customer franchise in several key sectors. Our focus now is to perform better at home, whilst expanding our business interests into the Indian sub-continent."

He brings with him global marketing and management skills which we see as vital for the future of any company striving to succeed in tomorrow's business environment. Furthermore he has an indepth knowledge of the pharmaceutical and personal care industries, which is especially relevant for us," he said.

"At corporate level, we are looking at strategic alliances to accelerate the pace of growth and Mr. de Mel's understanding of the international business environment will be of much value," Mr. Esufally said.
