Prof. G. L. Peiris Foundation cycle team

The standard and racing cycle races organised by Prof. G. L. Peiris Foundation and conducted by Sri Lanka Cycling Federation will be worked off on April 27 commencing at 7.30 a.m. This was disclosed by Dayasiri Jayasekera, Private Secretary to Prof. G. L. Pieris at a press briefing held at Sports Ministry auditorium on Wednesday. These events are organised by the Foundation as part of Sinhala/Tamil New Year celebrations, she added.

He also stated that cycling is a sport that is participated by many rural participants and it has become a sport that famous with the festive season in Sri Lanka. Though the race covers only the district of Colombo roads it allows participants from all parts of the country to ride in this race he said. This event also be a boost to local riders, he added.

N. Karunaratne, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation explaining the race detail said it will cover a distance of 125 kilo metres. Earlier it was planned to have two separate routes for standard and racing cycles, but we had to abandon this idea due to technical problems and decided to use the same route for both events he said.

The riders have to cover a distance of 125 kilometres. Riders face the starters orders at Wellampitiya junction will pass through, Kaduwela, Hanwella, Pahathgama, Godagama, Padukka, Ingiriya, Bandaragama, Panadura, Mount Lavinia, Bambalapitiya and cross the finish line opposite Gangaramaya Temple at Slave Island.

Winners of both races will receive a Trophy and a cash award of Rs. 20,000, while the first and second runners up in both events will carry away Rs. 15,000 and 10,000 respectively.

It was specifically stated that all racing cyclists should wear protective helmets as the event is conducted under international rules. More details and entry forms could be obtained from Prof. G. L. Pieris Foundation, No. 114, Katuwana Road, Homagama and Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka.
