Life sentence for woman heroin smuggler by Sarath Malalasekera Colombo High Court Judge S.I. Imam, sitting in the Negombo High Court, yesterday sentenced a fifty year old woman to life imprisonment when she was found guilty to the four charges preferred against her in a heroin case. The woman accused Faifa Hanoon Yusuf of Colombo was indicted on four counts with having on August 28, 1991 attempted to smuggle into the country 34.6 grammes and 13.8 grammes of heroin concealed in rubber condoms packed in a Sumeet blender and possession of heroin. She was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport by a Police team including WPC Renuka. Indictment stated that she had brought the heroin to Sri Lanka from Madras. Sentencing the accused the Judge observed that the prosecution had proved all the charges beyond reasonable doubt. State Counsel Miss Disna Warnakula appeared for the Attorney General. Edmond Rajapaksa appeared for the accused. |
