Prices soar as April season approaches by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya With the Nuwara Eliya April Season to begin with its full swing, already the prices of essential commodities have started soaring within the city limits and its outskirts, complain the housewives and the residents. They say, at least at such times, the Price Control authorities should be alert and protect the consumers. Generally with the influx of weekend holiday crowds, the prices of essential goods go up, as the holiday crowds are willing to pay any price as they come here to enjoy themselves and are in holiday mood and the same yardstick is applied to the local poor Nuwara Eliya residents too. The residents request the Government Agent, and politicians to look into grave injustice and unfairness meted out to them. Meanwhile, for the first time perhaps in the whole country, a co-operative supermarket is being opened at Nuwara Eliya during this week. |
