Govt to reorganise public service

by Ambalangoda Central special correspondent

The State and the public service should have a mutual interest with regard to the execution of official duties of government servants. The public servants have been adopting a rather passive attitude towards their duties mainly due to a variety of restraints they encounter in the course of their day-to-day work, said Vajira Abeywardena Minister of Public Administration Management and Reforms addressing the Ambalangoda Divisional Co-ordinating Committee meeting held at the auditorium of the Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat.

He said the Government will reorganise the public service removing all such barriers to an efficient and public friendly service. Public servants should remember to keep the development plans and programs of the government in perspective and unless they have a thorough grasp of the government's development strategy they will not be able to execute their work in a satisfying manner in which case it would mean a negation of what public servants stand for. Whenever members of the public talk to you about their problems you should be a good and sympathetic listener. The willingness and enthusiasm to serve the public should be a way of life for public servants.

He said: "As a result of stupid decisions of some politicians in the past a stupendous amount of water of the Gin ganga goes waste into the sea. If we secure the funds we will go ahead with plans to build a dam on the Gin ganga river to expand irrigation facilities and generate much needed electricity for the region".

Mrs. K.P.I. Piyadasa Deputy Director (Planning) Galle District Secretariat said it is the responsibility of the local Divisional Secretariat authority to report back to the Galle District Secretariat in time on the development projects that they propose to implement in the Ambalangoda Divisional Secretariat area. Rs. 20 lakhs is set apart annually for development work in respect of Ambalangoda and if the proposals are not furnished well before time such funds may be withdrawn, the Deputy Director said.

SPC Councillor and UNP Organiser for Ambalangoda Upali Siri Sumana also spoke.
