Seventy buses on Colombo-Jaffna route

Rehabilitation,Resettlement and Refugees Minister Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena yesterday said the A-9 route will be opened before the new year.

As the initial stage, the National Transport Commission has made arrangements to run 70 buses from Colombo on the route including 30 CTB buses and 40 private buses. These buses will include normal and luxury buses, he said.

The Minister said all the arrangements to open the A-9 route have already been finalised and repairs to the damaged stretch of road in the Omanthai and Muhamalai areas have already been completed.

He said the Transport Ministry has also provided Rs. 25 million in grants to his ministry to effect immediate repairs of the A-9 route.

Meanwhile, the public transport services will also commence to Jaffna shortly from other cities like Kandy and Batticaloa.

Dr. Jayawardena said steps have also been taken to reopen the Jaffna library by mid May. Initiatives have been taken to renovate the clock tower situated in the middle of Jaffna city which was constructed during the British period. It will shortly be opened by the British High Commissioner.

The Minister said a special cultural show will be conducted in Jaffna and Vavuniya on April 13 while a special "Dharma Yathra" will commence from Kataragama Kiri Vehera to the Naga Vihara, Jaffna in connection with the pinnacle laying ceremony of the Dagaba of the Naga Vihara.

A special mobile medical clinic will be conducted in Jaffna on April 6 and 7 to uplift the health conditions of the people. A 50 member medical team will conduct this two day clinic, the Minister added.
