Peace Marathon starts off from Colombo

The Peace Marathon to Jaffna organised by the Interior Ministry to mark the re-opening of the A-9 Kandy-Jaffna highway started off from Torrington Square, Colombo this morning (April 6). Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was also scheduled to participate in the ceremonies held at Torrington Square in this connection.

Interior Minister John Amaratunga told a Press Conference on Thursday that the LTTE had no objection to the Peace Marathon conducted from Colombo. A statement to this effect was issued by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) on Thursday.

The Minister who requested clergy of all religious to invoke blessings on the Peace Marathon asked for public co-operation and assistance to make it a success.

Two letters sent by Bishop of Jaffna Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam and Bishop of Mannar Dr. Rayappu Joseph offering their blessings to the Peace Marathon was shown to the journalists by Minister Amaratunga along with the SLMM statement.

Minister Amaratunga said the entire Peace Marathon program is Co-ordinated by SSP (Gamapaha) Lucky Pieris. DIGs Bodhi Liyanage, Pathmasiri Liyanage, Lawerence Amarasena, Nimal Mediwaka, Ananda Jayasekera, W. Dharmaratne, Keerthi Gajanayake and Daya Jayasundera will supervise all support services with the assistance of the public in the respective areas.

Hindu Affairs Minister T. Maheswaran said as people from the South carry the message of peace to the North more than 1,000 residents from the North would come along Anuradahapura - Puttalam road bringing the peace message to the South.

Hindu clergy with nearly 25,000 people will join the Peace Marathon from Vavuniya.
