Referee Management vital for Sri Lanka says Ayoub

The New South Wales Referee Manager Georgo Ayoub speaking at a press briefing said that to adopt a system and conduct the system professionally is vital to ensure that the standards of refereeing improves.

Touching on the importance of recruiting new referees and monitoring their progress to make competent referees is the first step at this workshop. Australia is advanced in this field and he has come to Sri Lanka on the invitation of the CPRFU Referees society and would be pleased to educate and conduct this programme. He agreed to come again to complete his mission at the request of Dilip Kumar-Chairman New South Wales Rugby Union.

On various queries raised at the conference he said that although the referees society in Austrlia is under the umbrella of the Austrlia Rugby Union, The Referees Society is managed separately and he is the referees manager/trainer. Those in the society are Ex-Referees and Ex-Coaches and conducted independently. The assignment committee of referees are those with no affiliations with clubs. All International class referees are assessed and other referees are coached, that's how the standards of refereeing can improve and the interest to join increases. In Australia referees are professional and their goal is to perform well and be competent.

Brigadier Jupana Jayawardena, - President CPRFU referees society gave a comprehensive report on the credentials of George Ayoub and said that with a personality of this nature the standard of refereeing will improve immensely. Maurice Perera-President CPRFU touched on the yester years of rugby and the high standards maintained then and were looking forward to another era of high quality refereeing in Sri Lanka. He further said that with a great demand for referees this workshop should provide the base of more referees to join and urged the sports Minister to assist in this move.

The conference was well attended and Iswan Omar Vice President thanked all present and in particular the electronic and Print Media for their presence and supporting this worthy cause. Besides the sponsors connaissence de Ceylon, and B.C.C. Lanka Ltd for having come forward to sponsor the Press conference together with the Kandy Sports Club, Penguin Clothing, and well wishes.

The Cadet referees workshop is being conducted from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm from the 28th to 30th March at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium. After the conclusion of the workshop Certificates will be awarded to successful candidates after an examination conducted by George Ayoub.
