Sri Lankan community paper in London hails Mahinda as Opposition Leader

by Colvin L. De Silva - Our London Correspondent

"SILVARROW" the oldest and the most popular Sri Lankan community journal published for the last twenty three years catering to both Sinhalese and Tamils, in its issue of March hails the newly elected Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa as the most capable leader to take the Party forward after its stinging defeat at the last December Polls and the recently conducted Local Government elections. The story goes to say that during the difficult and frightening days in Sri Lanka's contemporary history, when SLFP politics was 'almost banned', Mahinda kept on working for the uplift of the Party and its progress despite the severe threats he faced from the political opponents at that time.

When contacted by the Daily News Parakrama Ranasinghe - Solicitor and President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Branch in the United Kingdom said that he is in full agreement with the story published by "SILVARROW" and reiterated that Mahinda Rajapaksa is the most suitable man for the job as at today considering the fact that Mahinda has always stood firmly by the Party both in victory and defeat and never changed sides for personal gain. Ranasinghe said that Mahinda is a fine grass roots level politician and has the appeal of the masses. He has won the confidence of the Buddhist clergy and has the political maturity to lead the Party to success in the not so distant future. Of course at the present moment, he is fully endorsing the peace initiative of the Government of Ranil Wickremesinghe and will give his full support to rid the country from the menace of terrorism and achieve much needed peace.

It was the view of most members of the Branch that Mahinda will be an able leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and he will discharge his duties in a very responsible manner. Acting Secretary Sisira Perera confirmed that Mahinda is the right person to be at the helm of affairs of the Party during this particular period which he said is a period of transition. He concluded that the country's interest deserves first priority at the present moment as everyone yearns for peace. Asked if the Branch supports the idea of a National Government, he replied that the Party's politcial bureau will take the correct decision at the right time.
