by Colombo East group correspondent The Colombo Mayor, Omar Kamil ceremonially opened the new library building at High Level Road, Mugalan Road junction in Kirulapona. The Colombo Municipal Council under its library service expansion program built the new structure at a cost of rupees two and a half million on a request made by the Deputy Mayor U. L. Titus Perera said the Mayor addressing the gathering present. The Kirulapona library was primarily meant for the education of children in the area when it was founded in 1969. With the passage of time the library service had to be extended to the adult population as well. But the lack of space in the original library building caused problems for children and adults both. However with the completion of the new structure better facilities will be provided for the children to read and study and for the adults to read newspapers, magazines and books for their information and education conveniently. Within the last 3 years the Municipal Council has expanded 3 libraries including the one at Kirulapona. The other 2 are at Kotahena on the George R. De Silva Mawatha and Wanatamulla reminded the Mayor. He advised the children to make full use of the facilities provided to them. The Deputy Mayor, Titus Perera in his speech thanked the municipal officials, the MMC's and the general public for the cooperation extended to make the new library a reality, which willoffer better facilities to children and adults of the area. Wimal Gamini Rodrigo, MMC said that the new library is clean and beautiful and it is the duty of the children who will use it to maintain its cleanliness. M. D. S. Jayawardena, head of all the municipal libraries of the city, traced the history of the Kirulapona library when it was started on the initiative of Ananda Premasinghe, the then MMC for the area in 1969. |
