Mendis's century gives Thomians Lemonade Cup

by Chris Dhambarage

Sri Lanka Youth Cap Jeevan Mendis hit a blazing unbeaten century as S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia beat St. Peter's College by a convincing margin of eight wickets in the Elephant Lemonade Cup inter school knock out limited over cricket tournament final played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

The elegant left hander remained unbeaten on 103 made in just 91 deliveries as the Thomians overtook the Peterite total of 177 with more than fifteen overs to spare. Jeevan Mendis was in tremendous form as he paid scant respect to the Peterite attack stroking the ball to all corners of the ground.

He came into the middle at the vital stage of the innings when the Thomians had lost both openers quite cheaply. The situation became even worse when the consistent Denham Williams retired with a headache almost immediately. Paceman Sajitha Mendis gave some hope for the Peterites while striking twice in his opening spell.

However Jeevan Mendis had different ideas as he repaired the early damage with some intelligent batting. He found a reliable partner in Shamilal Mendis who batted equally well to complete a solid unbeaten half century. Shamilal Mendis who did not play either in the Big Match or in the Mustangs trophy one day game certainly proved his inclusion in the side with a matchwining performance.

The two Mendis' Jeevan and Shamilal really tore the Peterite attack during an unfinished third wicket partnership of 171 runs. Shamilal collected his runs from 67 deliveries and struck eight boundaries. Jeevan reached his second fifty in a spectacular manner and altogether he stroked 18 boundaries.

Earlier St. Peter's batting first after winning the toss were bowled out for 175 in the 49th over. Rashmilal Mohamed had another four wicket haul in successive outings and caused most of the damage along with Tharindu Fernando and Videsh Balasubramaniam. The Peterites would have been in even more trouble if not for a fighting half century from Prajeeve Jansz.

The number three batsman hit a top score of 75 from 125 deliveries inclusive of six boundaries. He added 47 runs for the fifth wicket with Ruchira Fernando but there after they lost wickets regularly and folded up in 48.1 overs.
