Eighty four incidents of election violence

In view of the escalating incidence of election violence in many electorates that have been reported to the Election Violence Monitoring Unit of the President's House,the Unit has requested the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence to provide military security to electorates where the situation are beyond control, states a Presidential Secretariat Media Release issued last evening.(19)

It states that by 6.00 pm on March 19, 84 incidents of violence have been reported and incidents of threat, assaults and election malpractices have been reported from various parts of the island including the areas of Rattota, Nittambuwa, Attanagalla, Meerigama, Kobeigane, Nikaveratiya, Kalawewa, Horana, Nivithigala and Puttalam where most of such incidents have taken place.

In addition, incidents of poll card plundering, snatching of money by showing lethal weapons, attacks on vehicles and threats to poll agents have been reported from many areas and in most of these incidents the victims are PA supporters while their assailants have been identified as UNP activists.

The Media Release further says that the Legal Division of the Presidential Unit of Election Violence Monitoring have been informed about these incidents reported after 12.00 noon yesterday to the Prime Minister's Secretary Bradman Weerakoon and Election Affairs DIG Gamini Navaratne while the grave incidents have been brought to the notice of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
