Priority to uplift children's education

by Ananda Kannangara

UNP candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Shiraz Noordeen said recently that priority will be given to improve the education of down trodden children in the city of Colombo, especially those who are living in shanties if he is elected to the CMC at the forthcoming Local Government Elections.

Mr. Noordeen made these observations at a ceremony organised by a section of voters to congratulate him for being appointed as a candidate for the CMC polls scheduled to be held on March 20. Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M. Azwer presided.

"It is sad to note that a large percentage of children between the ages of 6 and 18 years who are living in the Colombo Municipal limits do not attend school due to poverty and majority of them even do not have proper dwellings", he said

"Therefore, it is my duty to extend my support to all children as well as the citizens in the CMC limits irrespective of party politics if I am elected to the CMC", he added.

Minister A.H.M. Azwer commenting on the speech made by Noordeen said that late President R. Premadasa too identified the pulse of ordinary citizens like Mr. Noordeen and it helped him to become the President of the country at the latter stage.
