'Ups and downs in politics were common'

by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

The Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse said in politics the ups and downs were a common phenomenon, and the masses should not get disturbed or discontented by such trends. Instead the supporters of the PA and the SLFP should work hard for its continued sustenance by making the party stronger and stronger.

The Leader of the Opposition was addressing a crowd of party supporters following a reception accorded to him on being elevated to the position as Leader of the Opposition at the New Town Hall here.

Mr. Rajapakse said today the UNP Government and its leadership has been exposed to such an extent among the masses of this country, where all its promises, pledges have not been fulfilled, and put the people into an acute economic chaos.

He said today the Government has considered it fit enough to hold the local elections, when some of the opposition leaders and supporters are being put behind bars, in addition to the PA supporters being harassed, persons and their properties being destroyed and they have been victimised in all inhuman methods.

He appealed the party supporters to ensure that they harness all available human resources including the left forces and make the PA and the SLFP, a stronger and viable political force in the country as usual.

He assured as the Leader of the Opposition and as a senior leader of the SLFP he would see that the party's policies were carried on despite all barriers.

Mr. V. Puthirasigamony, MP said his joining the PA was done after a serious consideration of the deeds and misdeeds of the UNP. He said it was the PA Government which granted many concessions to the plantation workers.

Messrs Suriyaperuma, H.M. Abeysinghe, S. Sathasivam MP, Indrasara Senerathne and several others also spoke.
